Reservations are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. We do not offer a waiting list at this time. If you would like to change your orientation date, you can login to the orientation reservation site through the Admissions Profile or call Orientation Services at 319-335-1497.

The virtual components of orientation can be reviewed at any time, as long as you have access to the internet.  The virtual advising appointment (where you will meet with your academic advisor and complete registration for classes) will take place Monday – Friday.

Success at Iowa is required for all new students and is an important component of the orientation experience. The course will open on August 12, 2024. You will learn more about the course in the Orientation Tile during your orientation program. 

Yes! Plan to attend On Iowa! to meet other new students and prepare for your first day of classes. This welcome week opportunity hosts over 200 free events from August 13th through August 20th on campus. On Iowa! is a welcome week before the start of classes, which concludes your orientation experience. There are many events to help you get acquainted to campus, learn traditions and expectations, and get ready for life as a Hawkeye. You will meet other new students and connect with a leader who can serve as a resource for you. Learn more about On Iowa!

You will register with your academic advisor during your virtual academic advising appointment. When you complete your orientation reservation, you will select a week for this appointment. About 7 days prior to that week, you will choose the actual date and time on your advisor's schedule. This appointment will take up to an hour. 

Orientation is the start of your college experience and the relationship with your advisor. It is best experienced between you and your advisor. You can discuss your class schedule with parents or family members before or after the appointment, but the actual appointment should just be you and your advisor. 

During your virtual academic advising appointment, your academic advisor will spend time with you discussing your placement into math and chemistry classes. The course(s) that you may need to take and the corresponding placement test score are relative and depend on your unique situation including your major, career path, and any coursework that you may be transferring in from another institution. Learn more about placement testing.

Changing your major after you have registered for an orientation program may change the conversation you have with your advisor and the courses you will enroll in for the fall semester. We recommend that you change your major before signing up for orientation. You can change your major up to 2 weeks before your orientation week. You’ll be working with an advisor who specializes in your chosen program of study, so if you plan to change your major, please do so as soon as possible. If you have already signed up for orientation and need to change your major, please contact Orientation Services at 319-335-1497.

If you have a paper or electronic copy of your most recent high school transcript, please have it ready for your virtual advising appointment. The University of Iowa must still receive a final, official transcript from your high school prior to the start of the semester. It is also helpful to have a list of any transfer coursework (classes you’ve taken at another college or university), dual enrollment coursework (classes you took in high school and received credit for through a college or university), Advanced Placement (AP) test scores, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) scores or International Baccalaureate (IB) scores or coursework with you during your virtual advising appointment.

Recruited student athletes have the opportunity to meet with staff from the office of Student Athlete Academic Services. All student athletes should be in contact with their athletic advisor throughout the summer.

Students interested in fraternity and sorority life can learn more about the communities, as well as how to join, at the Fraternity and Sorority Life website. 

There will be opportunities to connect with student organizations at the beginning of the school year, including at On Iowa! and during the first few weeks of the semester. Keep an eye out for the Student Involvement Fair, where you can learn about opportunities to get involved with student organizations, volunteering, sports clubs, and employment. Yes! We will offer virtual sessions for you to ask questions and learn about a variety of topics and campus resources including Financial Aid, Housing & Dining, and more.

Unlike students, parents and families are not required to attend orientation. However, we hope you take advantage of the many additional opportunities to connect virtually or in-person with other students, families, and staff before the semester begins. 

The first day of classes for the fall semester is Monday, August 26. Questions about move-in can be directed to University Housing & Dining.
