An Interview with Xavier...
What advice would you share with a new student about their first year at the University of Iowa?
A lot of freedom and free time is a double-edged sword. It is very easy to lose sight of your academic responsibilities, especially in the dorm environment. I would say that for any time that you need to be productive, remove yourself from that dangerous and distracting environment and go to a library or other study area.
If you could go back in time, what might you have done differently in your first year at the University of Iowa?
I would have gotten involved in a research lab sooner for the main reason that it provides a network of mentors and acquaintances that I have found immensely helpful.
How did you decide on your major?
I saw that I enjoyed some classes more than others. For example, although the psychology courses seemed easier than the biology ones, I found myself interacting more with professors and TAs in the biology field and just getting more out of that experience.
