Welcome Transfer Students!
Welcome to the Hawkeye Family – we are thrilled you are joining us! We value you & your experience at your previous institution and want to ensure that you have a smooth transition to the University of Iowa. While there are a wide variety of resources available to you as an undergraduate student at Iowa, there are several resources specifically designed to support you as a transfer student. These include academic resources and initiatives or organizations designed to help you build connections early.
The Transfer Student Transition
The Transfer Transition Course
The Transfer Transition course is a class designed specifically to assist you, as a transfer student, in navigating your first semester at Iowa. Class sessions focus on topics such as defining The University of Iowa culture, discovering university resources, choosing careers and majors, refining study skills, taking tests, identifying personal values, exploring self-motivation, and setting goals. The course seeks to acquaint you with the information and skills you need to thrive at The University of Iowa. For more information about the course or to register for it, log into your MyUI account, click on “Course Browse/Registration” and search for “The Transfer Transition” using the keywords function or input “CSI” in the course subject box followed by “2100” in the course number box.
Transfer plans are designed to assist transfer students as they plan or prepare for their transition to the University of Iowa. They allow for perspective and incoming transfer students to learn more about course requirements for specific majors. Check them out on the Undergraduate Admissions website: https://admissions.uiowa.edu/transfer-plans.
Sample plans are another tool that all students can use to envision a path toward degree completion within a major. Please note that sample plans represent one way to complete a program of study. Actual course selection and sequence will vary, so all students should discuss their plan with their academic advisor. These can be accessed on the Sample Plans section of MyUI.
Building Your Support Team as a Transfer Student
At Iowa, every student has a support team – a combination of faculty and staff on campus who care about their success! This support team consists of a variety of people and can include your academic advisor, your resident assistant if you live on campus, your professors, your teaching assistants, and more. We know that building a support team comprised of faculty and staff, as well as peers is key to success, so we’ve created a few transfer student-specific groups on campus to facilitate those connections.
Transfer Support Team (TST)
The Transfer Support Team is a collective of faculty and staff at Iowa who volunteer to connect with new transfer students as they make their transition to Iowa. Transfer students who live off-campus will be welcomed by their TST member at the start of the semester via email. This individual is a designated resource for you. They will reach out periodically over the course of your first year at Iowa to check in, connect you to campus resources, and help you navigate personal or academic obstacles. You are encourage to respond to their outreach correspondence, even if you are not in need to additional support at the time. TST Members are there to celebrate your success with you, too!
