An Interview with Rachel...
Describe your first semester at the University of Iowa. How did it align with your expectations before arriving to campus?
I was really scared at first, because I didn't know what to expect. I'm the oldest of my siblings so I have to figure everything out for myself. After that initial panic, though, I began enjoying my classes and getting to know everyone on my floor. It was very hectic, too, as on top of 15 semester hours, I was working as a Metro reporter for the Daily Iowan, writing 2-3 stories each week. I don't know what my expectations were, but my first semester definitely surpassed them.
What advice would you share with a new student about their first year at the University of Iowa?
Ask for help. Everyone here is so nice, and you should never feel embarrassed for not knowing something or being unsure about something. Also, talk to people in your classes and in your hall. It's easy to start a conversation because you already have something in common.
How are you involved within the University of Iowa and/or greater Iowa City community?
Currently, I have a radio show on KRUI 89.7 FM. I write for The Odyssey and Her Campus. I have an internship with Big Ten Network Student U. I'm an On Iowa! Leaders. I'm the Honors Director for Homecoming 2016. I also work at the Iowa Memorial Union Welcome Center.
