Preparing for Orientation

What to expect

During your orientation program, you will spend time in small groups led by an Orientation Leader. You will meet other incoming students, explore campus, and learn about many resources available to you as a student. You will meet with your academic advisor, review available courses, and register for classes.

What to do Before Orientation

  1. Upload your Iowa One Card Photo through the Admission Profile on MyUI. Choose your own photo and then you can just pick up your official student ID card at orientation check-in.
  2. Complete the Introduction and the Plan Stage of the Success at Iowa course on Iowa Courses Online (ICON). This online course is required of all new students and the first parts need to be completed before your orientation program.
  3. Take any necessary Placement Tests at least 2 weeks before your orientation program.

What to bring

  • Your Hawk ID and password for course registration
  • A valid, government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or passport, to obtain an Iowa One Card, your official UI student ID

Parent & Family Program

Matching the expectations that students and families have of universities, and vice versa, is known to be a major factor in student satisfaction during the college years. Although the Parent and Family program is not required, we encourage parents to attend orientation to gain a better understanding of college life.

Parent & Family Program Agenda

Family and guest sessions, which are concurrent with student programs, focus on academic opportunities, university billing and financial issues, student health and safety information, and ways for family members to become part of the university community while helping their student make a successful transition to college life. A brief outline of our family and guest program is listed below.

Arrival time

Check-in for orientation runs from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm in the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU). Lunch is not built into the schedule so please plan to eat before or after checking in. There are several eateries in the IMU and a variety of options in the downtown Iowa City area, which is just a few blocks from our check-in location. The program begins at 12:30 pm.
