Position Summary:  Orientation Leaders assist new students and their families with their transition to the University of Iowa. Duties include serving as a positive representative for the university, responding to questions about student life and resources at Iowa, assisting students with the registration techniques during summer orientation programs, and mentoring and supporting On Iowa! leaders during On Iowa 2023. As an Orientation Leader you will develop the following skills:

Verbal and written communication skills - including public speaking
Productive relationship building
Problem solving
Group development and facilitation skills
Diversity and inclusion competency
Goal setting

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Current enrollment as a University of Iowa student
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and a student disciplinary records check
  • 24 semester hours or more earned by May 2023
  • UI and Cumulative GPA of 2.5  (First year students must have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher)
  • Ability to work effectively with groups and individuals from diverse backgrounds

Stipend and Benefits

  • $12 per hour
  • Meals provided during programs and some training 
  • Up to 3 semester hours of elective credit for the spring training program


  • Complete Spring and Summer training programs
  • Enroll in LS:1017 Orientation Leader Training, scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00am-12:15pm during the spring semester
  • Attend the entirety of all Orientation Services commitments, including Spring Training Course and On Iowa! Leader Training (Leaders are permitted to enroll in summer courses and hold additional employment if it does not conflict with scheduled orientation dates)
  • Effectively maintain professional boundaries with new students
  • Assist students and family members, displaying patience, concern, and openness
  • Observe all University and Orientation Services policies
  • Serve as a role model for student staff and incoming students and their families
  • Be a positive member of the Orientation Team
  • Communication effectively with a wide range of people
  • Perform all responsibilities in a punctual, reliable, and conscientious manner
  • Exercise mature judgment, good humor, flexibility and patience
  • Remain committed to programs and your position

Program Commitments

  • Must be available from May 8 - July 14, 2023
  • On Iowa! Leader spring training days in April and On Iowa! program week (August 7 - 25 2023)
    • (RA and Marching Band candidates are eligible to apply and conflicts will be addressed on a case by case basis with Orientation Professional Staff)
