Before making your reservation

  • You can make an orientation reservation once you have accepted admission by paying the $250 acceptance fee.
  • Confirm that your major is correct on your Admissions Profile in the MyUI student portal.
  • If you need to change your major, you can request this through your Admissions Profile in the Admissions Summary section. If changing your major requires changing colleges within the University (i.e. changing from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences to the Tippie College of Business), please call the Office of Admissions at 319-335-1549 to determine if you are eligible for this type of major change. All major changes should happen BEFORE you select an orientation program. If you are unsure of what you want to study, choosing "Open" as your major will allow you to explore many areas.
  • If you intend to teach at the high-school level, indicate the subject area (history, English, chemistry, etc.) as your major.
  • If you have been admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as having an "interest" in a major (such as elementary education or nursing) or as a "pre" major (business), this does not guarantee your admission to another college within the University. Please contact those colleges directly to find out about their specific admission requirements.

How your eligible program dates are determined

Orientation programs are scheduled based on advisor availability, and not all majors are represented at each program. When making your reservation on MyUI, you will see only program dates for which you are eligible.

First-year (freshman) students enrolling for summer or fall are required to attend a two-day program during the summer. Overnight accommodations are offered free of charge for two-day program participants (you must make a reservation). We offer three abbreviated one-day programs in August for first-year students who are unable to attend a two-day program in June or July. Space in the August programs is limited. Transfer students will attend a one-day program, offered in May, June, July, or August.

First-year students and transfer students enrolling for spring are required to attend a one-day program in December or January.

    Confirming your program date

We will email a confirmation to both your University of Iowa email address and the email address that you used to applied to the University within a week of completing your reservation. You will also be able to view your confirmed date on your Admissions Profile on MyUI. We will attempt to honor your first choice of program date, but this is not always possible due to limited space in the programs and advisor availability.

    Changing your reservation

If you need to reschedule, change your major, or change your residence hall lodging arrangement, login to MyUI and make adjustments to your original reservation or call Orientation Services at 319-335-1497.

If you change your major after you have a confirmed orientation date, please login to MyUI to determine if eligible dates have changed, or call Orientation Services at 319-335-1497 to reconfirm your date. Changing your major could change your orientation program date.
