Position Summary:  Orientation Leaders assist new students and their families with their transition to the University of Iowa. Duties include serving as a positive representative for the university, responding to questions about student life and resources at Iowa, assisting students with the registration process during summer orientation programs, and mentoring and supporting On Iowa! leaders during On Iowa 2020. As an Orientation Leader you will develop the following skills:

Verbal and written communication skills - including public speaking
Productive relationship building
Problem solving
Group development and facilitation
Diversity and inclusion competency
Goal setting

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Current enrollment as a University of Iowa student
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and a student disciplinary records check
  • 24 semester hours or more earned by May 2020
  • UI and Cumulative GPA of 2.5  (First year students must have a high school GPA of 3.5 or higher)
  • Ability to work effectively with groups and individuals with diverse backgrounds

Stipend and Benefits

  • $3400 stipend + $1000 stipend for August appointment
  • Residence hall room provided from May 18 - July 8 (shared with another Orientation staff member)
  • 3 semester hours of elective credit for the spring training program

Training Commitments

  • Spring - Must be available for Spring Semester Training Course - Meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:15 pm
  • Summer - Summer training involves a full time daily commitment from May 18-June 1, 2020

Program Commitments

  • Must be available from May 18 - July 8, 2020
  • 13 two-day, first year summer orientation programs
  • 10 one day, transfer programs during the spring and summer
  • On Iowa! Leader spring training days in April and On Iowa! program week (August 12 - 23, 2020)
    • (RA and Marching Band candidates are eligible to apply and conflicts will be addressed on a case by case basis with Orientation Professional Staff)

  • All applicants are invited to attend an Information Meeting, located in the Iowa Theater (first floor in the Iowa Memorial Union):
    • Tuesday, October 8 at 5:00 pm  
    • Tuesday, October 15 at 4:00 pm
    • Tuesday, October 24 at 6:00 pm
  • Orientation staff members may not enroll in summer session classes unless approved in advance by Orientation Services
  • Orientation staff members may not hold outside employment after the spring semester unless approved in advance by Orientation Services
